Uphill tour through France
Foreword :Day 8

This morning I was Lance Armstrong leading the peleton on the road through France to Rodez! No it’s OK, I wasn’t suffering from heat stroke. I just saw the tell tale still partly decipherable graffiti road markings that told me that my man “Lance Armstrong” & 200 other athletes had cycled this very road. I put my head down & stepped up the cadence racing to my imaginary finish line. Out of breath, but exceedingly happy & content I hoisted my arms & shouted at the top of my voice “KING OF THE WORLD” beating my chest like a gorilla. Not quite the British coolness & understatement I know, but this was my tour, I was a winner & feeling good at what I was doing!

Grab a coffee and pull up an armchair. Travel with me for the next 30 minutes through one of the most scenic Countries in the World. France!

Alastair Humphreys wrote in his first book ; Moods of Future Joys, a paragraph that sums up my feelings of the Danube River.

People would ask “Did you see Macchu Pichu, Grand Canyon, the Pyramids?” And I would say “Yes, and I also saw the Danube”

There is something tranquil, soothing even enlightening about cycling Great Rivers, it’s something that I am addicted to and would recommend to any want to be cyclist.Whether it be my old faithful Danube the Elbe or the Rhine these are the majestic Rivers that I love to cycle

My first ever Passau Vienna trip took me 3 days. A Few trips later & I was down to 2 days. Then one day I decided, I was going to do this in one day.
My one day 345km mad dash from Passau to Vienna

So I was thinking, wouldn’t it be cool to cycle to Asia.
Vienna to Istanbul 1800km in 10 1/2 days

Every week my flight from Vienna to London would take me over this majestic River, it was then that I decided it was time that I should also cycle it.
The Rhine from its Estuary to the Source

My Virgin tour also took me along the Danube:
Basel to Vienna following my faithful Danube

Basel-Wien Deutsche fassung

Last but not least, from my business travels to Hamburg I got the following idea:

Cycling the Elbe from the Estuary to Prague
